Preparing to participate in Transformative Education Summit in New York

The world is preparing to launch the World Summit on Transformative Education 2022, which will be held by the United Nations at its headquarters in New York City during the period between 16-19 September 2022, with wide participation of governments, United Nations organizations, civil society organizations and international institutions working and supporting the field of education in the world. Where the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), and ACEA will participate in this global event represented by Mr. Refaat Sabbah.

The Arab Campaign for Education for All, in partnership with the Arab educational coalitions, seeks to enhance the efforts and presence of the global civil society in this summit by launching a series of symposia and regional consultative meetings in the form of Seminars to discuss the concept of Transformative Education in its five tracks in depth and come up with a set of suggestions, recommendations and initiatives that aims to change education in the Arab region. This process began at the beginning of August 2022, and will continue until holding the regional meeting on Transformative Education in the Arab region, which will be held on September 5th, 2022, organized by the campaign and its partners with wide international and Arab participation.

ACEA, through the results and outputs of the Arab consultation process, will work to formulate a unified Arab position reflects the vision of civil society organizations in the Arab region towards the five tracks of the  Transformative Education , and  transferring  it  to the World Summit .In addition to the  attempt to pressure governments to save education, which has been greatly damaged as a result of several reasons, the latest of which was the Covid-19 pandemic and its negative effects on the educational process as a whole.

The global summit and the process of regional consultations come at a time when our Arab region and our world are facing unprecedented challenges such as climate change, violent and hate ideologies, new conflicts and wars, a wave of economic crises, and the risks of global epidemics whose effects are still present today. Therefore, education systems need to be redirected. To provide learners with the knowledge, values and capabilities to act towards improving the lives of people and the planet and stop the rapid deterioration towards more global crises.

The Arab Campaign for Education for All believes that the process of building this world requires not only learning to read and write, but we also need people to learn cooperation, empathy, solidarity, collectively solving complex problems, and communicating with others and nature in a positive and responsible manner. Therefore, the regional consultation process came to discuss the concept of Transformative Education in order to push more towards redefining education to become an education for thinking and understanding, and in a way that enables the learner not to look and think about what he/she  invents or recognize today through the eyes of the past, meaning that it is an education that leads to real change, which is opposite to what traditional education has produced of minds that repeat themselves and have the ability to memorize information, not to process and interpret it and produce meaning that is translated into practices in his/her life.

It is worth mentioning that the concept of Transformative Education has emerged recently as one of the attempts to reconsider the fourth goal of education, its targets and indicators, especially with the steady changes in the world in technology and informatics, and the inability of traditional education to empower the learner with skills and tools to change his/her life for the better.
